Lot Essay

The overall design of flowering palmettes and naturalistic floral sprays on the present carpet, clearly derives from a 17th century Isfahan carpet that is in the Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna, (Austria), (Angela Völker, Die orientalischen Knüpfteppiche im MAK, Vienna, 2001, pp.220-221, pl.79). The original source was probably its illustration in F. Sarre and H. Trenkwald, Alt-Orientalische Teppiche, Vienna, 1926, Vol.1, pl.24.
