Lot Essay

This scagliola table top forms part of a group inspired by the paintings excavated at Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as the figural panels found on antique ceramic vessels. An inexhaustible source for scagliolisti was the publication of the antique vases from the collection of William Hamilton (d. 1803) in Antiquités Etrusques, Grecques et Romaines tirées du Cabinet de M. Hamilton envoyé extraordinaire et plénipotntiaire de S.M. Britannique en Cour de Naples in 1776 in four volumes. A scagliola table top with similar Etruscan-inspired central panel within grotesque scrolls is illustrated in A.M. Massienlli, Scagliola l'arte della pietra di luna, Rome, 1993, pp. 170 - 171, fig. 110.
