STAMPED TWICE 'I.C.ELLAUME' AND ONCE 'JME', MID-18TH CENTURY
The shaped molded top with foliate angle clasps inset with a black leather writing-surface, above the shaped frieze with three short drawers and divided by foliate mounts, the shaped sides with conforming mounts and on cabriole legs headed by a pierced mount and terminating in C-scroll and cabochon sabots, stamped to the underside of the drawer side, the mounts originally lacquered and later gilt, restorations to veneers

Lot Essay

Jean-Charles Ellaume, maître in 1754.

A number of variations of this elegant model, all stamped by Ellaume, are known. One from the collection of the Baroness Burton, sold Christie's, London, 22 November 1950, lot 288, one with sumptuous mounts from the collection of the Earl of Mansfield and Mansfield, sold Sotheby's, London, 8 December 1967, lot 148, while another with similar mounts but not stamped was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 5 July 2001, lot 228.
