Lot Essay

The present model is from a series of figure groups depicting Chinese subjects, all strongly modeled by Joseph Weinmüller and possibly connected in some way with the Chinese ballet. It has been suggested that this group depicting the Chinese emperor is the work of Domenico Ferretti. See W.B. Honey, German Porcelain, pl. 62 for the example in the Victroria and Albert Museum, London. Also Die Sammlung der Markgraffen und Grossherzöge von Baden, Band III - Ceramics and Glass; Sotheby's on site, 5-21 October 1995, lots 814, 815, 816 for the example of the present group and two related subjects sold at auction.
