Lot Essay

Several examples of this model are known, including those in the Fischer Collection sold by J.M. Herberle 25 October 1906, lots 996 and 996a; a pair of similar wolves sold Christie's London, 7 October 1996, lot 459, and a single example from the The Gutmann Collection, Christie's, London, 5 July 2004, lot 156. The present example would appear to be the only one marked with the 'K.H.C' inventory mark from the Könliche Hof-Conditorei, indicating that it was stored in the Saxon Royal Court Confectionary for use as table decoration.
