A LARGE COLLECTION OF ROMAN GLASS VESSELS
CIRCA 1ST-6TH CENTURY A.D.
Including an aubergine glass jar with ribbed body, 4¼ in. (11 cm.) high; a green glass double unguentarium with high loop handle, 6½ in. (16.5 cm.) high; another with twin handles and applied trail around the body, now mostly missing, restored, 5½ in. (14 cm.) high; another with body wound with thick applied trails and zigzag trail between rim and body, 4 1/8 in. (10.5 cm.) high; seven unguentaria including an elongated unguentarium with bulbous lower and middle body, 16 in. (41 cm.) high, and another similar the bulbous middle body with deep ribbing, 5½ in. (14 cm.) high; three green glass single-handled juglets including one with trefoil-lip, 5½ in. (14 cm.) high max.; a tall green glass beaker with iridescence, 5¼ in. (13/2 cm.) high; two green glass cups, both on ring feet, one with black and silver iridescence, 3 in. (9.5 cm.) diam. max.; a green glass flask, the rounded body decorated with two rows of pinched dots, 3½ in. (9 cm.) high; a pale green glass flask, with indented body, the flaring neck wound with turquoise spiral trail, 3½ in. (9 cm.) high; another flask with flange around base of body, 3 in. (7.5 cm.) high; and a thick dark glass cosmetic tube, the body with twisted diagonal ribbing, twin handles, on pad foot, 3¾ in. (9.5 cm.) high (27)
Provenance
With a label from W. A. Huxtable & Co, Auctioneers and Furniture Salesmen, with typed note on the reverse reading: "This collection formerly belonged to the Grandson of a Scottish Nobleman - The 11th Earl of Fyfe and Angus", with an attached label that reads "... exquisite Collection of Ancient [PHOE]NICIAN GLASS (300 B.C.) ... from the Harbour of Tyre".
