Lot Essay

Humfry Payne was one of the most outstanding Classical archaeologists of his generation. He was Director of the British School of Archaeology in Athens from 1929 until his tragically early death in 1936. His first book, Necrocorinthia: a study of Corinthian Art in The Archaic Period, placed him in the front rank of Classical archaeologists and influenced many subsequent studies of archaic art. He married the eminent film critic, Miss Dilys Powell, in 1926. His life and the adventures of his Philhellenic contemporaries were celebrated by his wife in two novels written after the war.
