A CANOSAN TERRACOTTA BUST OF A WOMAN

On integral square base, wearing large spherical earrings, her hair drawn back and tied in a chignon at the nape of her neck, with tendrils escaping onto each shoulder, wearing a thick fillet with ivy leaves either side, surmounted by four curling acanthus leaves, remains of polychromy over hair, leaves, lips and eyes, mounted

Lot Essay

These terracottas are often considered as thymiateria but this example only has a slight depression in the centre of the acanthus leaves which may mean that it was intended purely for decoration.
