Of conical form with incurved rim, the interior with large spiralling black text, with a short line of script on the exterior
7¼ in. (18.5 cm.) diam.
Provenance
Formerly in an English private collection and acquired by the then owner's father in the Middle East during the late 1940s-early 1950s: sold Christie's London, 8 April 1998, lot 333.

Lot Essay

Incantation bowls were inscribed with magical spells to protect against malevolent forces and were customarily buried upside down under the floors of houses in order to 'trap' demons; they were also used in cemeteries.
