As legend has it, a maiden named Dona Carmen and her forbidden lover, Don Luis, would secretly meet through their neighboring windows in this narrow alleyway in Guanajuato, Mexico. When Dona Carmen's violent and hysterical father discovered the couple's meetings, he became so enraged that he killed his daughter while Don Luis watched from his window helplessly. Realizing that his true love was now gone, Don Luis gave Dona Carmen a final farewell kiss on her lifeless hand. This alleyway, where this romantic tragedy had taken place, was forever deemed, "El Callejon del Baso" or "The Street of the Kiss" to commemorate the tragic story.
