Lot Essay

A very similar intact ewer, formerly in the Kevorkian Collection, is now in the Khalili Collection (Ernst J. Grube, Cobalt and Lustre, The Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art, London, 1994, no.149, pp.148-9). Both are very probably from the same mould; the greater height of the present example being accounted for by its higher foot. Exactly the same form and decoration is also found in lustre examples (Jay Gluck, The World Of Persian Pottery, Tokyo, 1980, no.249).
