Lot Essay

A number of pottery ewers are known that reproduce a shape better known in bronze. Lot 17 in this sale is a typical example. The treatment however of the spout and cover on this unusually large ewer appear to be unique in its closeness to metalwork. Another very unusual feature of this ewer is the treatment of the foot which has completely flat pottery across the base with no trace of a ring extending below it, again copying a feature that is found in metal.
