Lot Essay

Hans Memling used the tondo format for depictions of the Virgin and Child on several occasions including a Virgin lactans in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Contemporary artists used the tondo less frequently than other formats and seem to have reserved it for such dramatic subject matter as Christ crowned with thorns and the head of St. John the Baptist on a plate.
