Lot Essay

This painting is based on Joos van Cleve's Crucifixion in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (see J.O. Hand, Joos van Cleve: The Complete Paintings, New Haven and London, 2004, p. 84, no. 55). The artist has closely followed Joos' depiction of the Virgin and St. John in the Boston panel but has made changes to both the figure of Christ and the landscape background. The rock formations are less dramatic than those in the Boston painting and the sky is darker and more foreboding.
