The present painting appears to be a copy of a lost composition by Andrea Solario, thought to have been painted around 1506-7. Another copy, which is presumed to be from the artist's studio, is in the National Gallery, London (inv. no. 2504; see D.A. Brown, Andrea Solario, Milan, 1987, pp. 132 and 150, no. 33, fig. 105).
