Lot Essay

Romantic visions of Roman ruins - more often invented capricci than topographically accurate views - appealed to Venetian view painters as a diversion from their usual vedute. There are numerous examples by painters such as Canaletto, Bellotto and Guardi, and even Carlevarijs is known to have worked in this genre on occasion. This is, however, a unique example within Richter's own oeuvre.
