This painting is a reduced version of the work known as The Itinerant Painter in the Louvre, which includes the artist's hands and more of the figure on the canvas. Frima Fox Hofrichter (Judith Leyster, Doornspijk, 1989, fig. 148) catalogued the Louvre painting as 'School of Hals/Leyster, and Seymour Slive, (Frans Hals, London and New York, 1974, p. 136, fig. 137/D22-1) and lists four versions of this subject under 'doubtful and wrongly attributed paintings'. None of these four refers to this painting.
We would like to thank Prof. Frima Fox Hofrichter for her assistance in cataloguing this painting.
