It is likely that the present painting derives from Francesco Albani's, Christ and the Woman of Samaria (Kunsthistoriches Museum, Vienna). While there are noticeable differences between the two paintings, the common use of a vertical format and monumental figures is significant. This treatment of the subject is unusual in seventeenth-century Bolognese painting, which typically derives from Annibale Caracci's pastoral prototype (also Kunsthistoriches Museum, Vienna). Albani's painting is, therefore, the most likely source for this late imitator.
