Lot Essay

The signature is of an unusual form, just reading amal-e kamtarin Muhammad Baqir rather than his normal Ya Baqir al-'ulum. The penbox is however certainly in his style, with his trademark branch of prunus blossom running straight through the composition from bottom to top. A similar penbox signed by Muhammad Baqir is in the Khalili Collection (Nasser D. Khalili, B.W. Robinson and Tim Stanley, Lacquer of the Islamic Lands, vol.1, London, 1996, no.76, p.115).
