Lot Essay

The reign of Sultan Suleyman (1520-66) marks the expansion of the Iznik industry. Dishes and bowls in blue and turquoise draw on both 14th and 15th century Chinese blue and white designs mainly depicting the natural world, with tulips, hyacinth and carnations often arranged in vases, tankards or tall flasks. While the importance of production in Iznik during the 16th century is unquestioned, evidence has emerged of a small but high quality studio working in Istanbul in the early 16th century, and some scholars have long argued for a production in Kutahya at the same period (J. Carswell: Iznik Pottery, Ch. 3, 1998)
