A late Victorian oxidised and lacquered-brass transit theodolite,
engraved J. B. Winter & Son 21 Great St Newcastle-on-Tyne, the telescope with rack and pinion focusing, eyepiece with four sighting wire adjusters, lens hood, graduated bubble-level, the axis with 6-inch vertical circle with silvered scale, two verniers and magnifiers, located on twin A-frames with bubble-level and tangent-screw adjustment and clamp, mounted on the horizontal plate with cross-bubble, silvered scale, twin verniers and swivel magnifier, the compass bowl with silvered scale with eight compass points, needle, and outer circumference graduated 0-360°, rack and pinion adjustment to horizon plate, mounted atop four-screw tripod attachment, the original mahogany case with trade label and plaque -- 14 x 7¾ x 11¾in. (35.5 x 19.6 x 27.3cm.)
