A mid 17th-Century miniature Nuremberg ivory and wood diptych dial,
possibly from the Karner family workshop, with black, blue and red colouring and stylised foliate and pattern decoration -- 6.5cm. (2½in) wide: Leaf Ia: rotating gilded lunar volvelle with moon face decoration and graduated hours 1-12 twice and index, with inner scale labelled 1-12 twice, middle scale labelled 1-29 and outer scale labelled for sixteen points of the compass, with compass viewing aperture; Leaf Ib: the vertical dial labelled VI-XII-VI with red asterisks for half-hours and a large six-pointed star motif; Leaf IIa: horizontal dial labelled 4-12-8 with red asterisks for half-hours, the glazed compass with blued-steel needle and Cardinal points, and pin gnomon dial for Italian hours 10-23; Leaf IIb: undecorated.
