An early 18th-Century French lacquered-brass Butterfield-type compass sundial,
signed N Bion A Paris, with bird-shaped folding gnomon, the horizontal plate engraved with hours scales for 40°, 45°, 50° and 55°, the glazed compass with crude blued-steel needle and eight points, the underside engraved with latitudes for twenty-three continental cities and towns -- 7.5cm. (3in.) wide
