Accompanied by Patek Philippe Certificate of Origin dated 15 July 1975 and Extract from the Archives confirming its production with enamel portrait miniature "George Washington" by L. Pellarin-Le Roy in 1971 and subsequent sale on 3 June 1975.
For over 3,000 years, fine enamelling has decorated and enriched watches, jewellery and objets d'art. Patek Philippe maintains this rare craft of miniature enamelling, traditionally associated with the finest Geneva timepieces, and in many ways the most difficult of the decorative arts.
Nowadays, only few artists such as L. Pellarin-Leroy, M. Bischoff and Suzanne Rohr (see lots 118 and 119 in this auction) still master this art. These rare Patek Philippe timepieces are, in general, made to special order with the subject matter to be represented chosen by the client. They often include famous landscape and portrait paintings, celebrities or even family members of the future owner.
It is thought that the enamel miniature on the present watch is after Charles Willson Peale's painting "General Washington at Princeton", circa 1779, often referred to as the 'Valley Forge' portrait. In Peale's work, Washington is depicted standing with his head uncovered but holding the tricorn in his right hand.
George Washington (1732-1799)
Commander in Chief of the American forces in the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) and from 1789 to 1797 the first President of the United States. Because of his central role in the founding of the United States, Washington is often called the "Father of his Country". His devotion to republicanism and civic virtue made him an exemplary figure among American public figures.
Charles Willson Peale (1741 -1827)
The well-known American portraitist was born in Queen Anne's County, Maryland. As an enthusiastic patriot he moved to Philadelphia in 1775 and joined the city militia as a private.
Charles Willson Peale is best remembered as the "Artist of the American Revolution." He was the patriarch of what became an extraordinary family of American painters which included his children Raphaelle (1774-1825), Rembrandt (1778-1860), Rubens (1784-1865), Titian Ramsay (1799-1885), niece Sarah Miriam Peale (1800-1885) and nephew Charles Peale Polk (1767-1866).
