Lot Essay

Jürgen Abeler's Meister der Uhrmacherkunst lists several watches by J.C. Hirschauer, Dresden, notably an agate pocket watch, around 1770 (Private Collection).

The particularity of the present watch is its case, made of two entire pieces of agate polished to form the bezel and the case back. Agate, a semiprecious silica mineral, has been used for centuries for the manufacture of gems and ornaments.
