The Pass of Achray is a narrow glen, providing a conduit for water flowing east from Loch Katrine to Loch Achray, near Callander in Perthshire. The present work appears to show a prospect looking east, across Loch Achray from the mouth of the pass, and the hill shown in the distance would therefore be Ben Venue. Nasmyth was a prolific painter of Scottish landscapes, combining influences from Claude Lorrain and Jacob van Ruisdael, alongside theories of the picturesque.
