Born in Edinburgh, Raeburn spent virtually his entire career in the city, becoming the most sought-after portraitist in Scotland. His critical success was such that he was knighted by George IV in 1822. This was a period in which Edinburgh drew great acclaim, both for its progressive intellectual climate and for the elegant neoclassical development of the New Town. Raeburn took the opportunity to travel after his marriage in 1778, and was able to absorb the latest artistic developments in London and Italy, returning to Edinburgh in 1787.
