Lot Essay

David Farquharson returned to his native Perthshire in 1878, six years after departing for a new life in Edinburgh, to paint this scene of Drummond Forest. The forest was planted in the seventeenth century by Black Duncan, the laird of Breadalbane, and is thought to be the site of Britain's first managed forest.
