Houston had a life-long passion for fishing which influenced his choice of painting grounds and Loch Fyne was one of his favourite locations. The family owned Cuil House near Loch Fyne which allowed him to paint throughout the seasons, he particularly enjoyed autumn, winter and early spring. When a trip to New York precluded him staying in Argyll he bemoaned the visit saying that, 'in Cuil, however, one sees life at its best' (see E. Robson, George Houston, Edinburgh, 1997, pp. 49-50).
