Lot Essay

Peploe first painted on Iona in 1920 with Cadell. Particularly to the north looking towards Mull, the island soon became a place of personal inspiration to which he returned year after year. It has therefore been referred to as his Mont St Victoire. He valued the beauty, ruggedness and human scale of its rocks and the shifting colours of its sands, waters, rocks and cloudscape.
