In the summers of 1911 and 1913, Peploe was painting in the town of Cassis in the South of France. Here in 1913 he was joined by Fergusson and some of the latter's pupils from the Académie de la Palette in Paris. Their paintings share an interest in the use of planes and coloured outlining to define form. Both this painting and another street scene, Cassis (see lot 168) capture the sense of daytime heat reflected by white-washed walls. Peploe's interest in complementary colours; blues and orange, is particularly visible here.
