Peploe returned to Cassis in early 1930 and, like the earlier paintings of Cassis (see lot 175), he once again looked to the white houses and streets for inspiration. Peploe conveys the heat and dust by using dry paint, as Guy Peploe describes, 'He has had to work harder to reach his vantage-point for Bird's-eye View, Cassis where a noon sun's rays preside over a parched, mineral landscape, the red roofs of the villas the only colour not bleached to pale shades' (G. Peploe, op. cit., pp. 76-7).
