Lot Essay

The present work dates from the year in which Fergusson settled in Paris. His first studio apartment (he moved to an apartment in the rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs) was in the Boulevard Edgar Quinet, a street running parallel to the Boulevard Montparnase, both of which were crossed by the Boulevard Raspail.

Two favourite cafés, the Dôme and the Hole-in-the-Wall, were located at the junction of the two larger boulevards. When the Peploes moved to Paris in 1910 they lived on the Boulevard Raspail.

With its minimal detailing and studied interest in tonal values, this quick sketch is typical of those from a period when Fergusson was about to adopt a Fauvist use of colour.
