Lot Essay

This careful arrangement of colour and form with prominent red or blue outlining lends this still life a bejewelled clarity.

The technique of outlining was used by both Peploe and Fergusson from around 1910-11 in both landscapes and more formal, academic painting. With its sense of rhythm the painting is a reminder of how close the fine and decorative arts were in Paris at this time.
