Lot Essay

During the summers of 1910 and 1911, the Peploe's spent a few weeks painting with Fergusson and Fergusson's partner, the American illustrator and artist Anne Estelle Rice, in the town of Royan at the mouth of the Gironde. Peploe's son Willie was born there in 1910.

In their oil sketches of the harbour and town, the artists adopted techniques similar to those developed primarily for still life work; in particular the coloured outlining of form. Rice and Fergusson and the latter's students at the Académie de la Palette (including Emily Carr and Marguerite Thompson) also used this technique. In the present work Peploe did not allow outline to dominate but blocked in the colour to convey the street's atmosphere.
