Lot Essay

Eardley was born in Warnham, Sussex and studied briefly at Goldsmiths College before moving to Glasgow where she trained at Glasgow School of Art under Hugh Adam Crawford. She discovered the small fishing village of Catterline in 1950 and thereafter divided her time between her studios in Glasgow and Catterline.

Her semi-abstracted landscapes include collaged layers of earth and sand in the paint, whilst her expressive portrayals of the deprived children from the tenement blocks in Glasgow are closely observed studies drawn from life.
