Lot Essay

Eardley discovered the village of Catterline in 1950 and was enchanted, in a letter to her mother she wrote, 'It really is a lovely country. I have quite fallen for it - quite different from the west, more rolling, with lovely reddish earth'. The present work bears a close similarity to a drawing executed on that first visit of a flock of sheep feeding on turnips in a red field near a little farmhouse (see C. Oliver, Joan Eardley, Edinburgh, 1988, pp. 60-61).
