MacTaggart studied at Edinburgh College of Art with fellow artists William Gillies (1898-1973) and William Crozier (1897-1930), and went on several trips to the South of France with them in the 1920s, including to St Tropez and Cannes. In France he also visited Anne Redpath (1895-1965), another graduate of the Edinburgh College of Art, who was living in nearby St Raphael.

MacTaggart owned a villa in Bormes-les-Mimosas in France, and the present lot is a portrayal of this medieval village. The houses are covered with pink tiles which provided him with a fitting image for his fascination with planar construction. This interest was also shared by Crozier and inspired by Cézanne's paintings in Aix-en-Provence. This resulted in a simplification of form which is reminiscent of the work of Roger Fry and the Bloomsbury artists.

MacTaggart's later use of thick impasto (see lot 207) is evidence of his increasing use of an expressionistic style, inspired by Norweigan artist Edvard Munch (1863-1944), whose exhibition he saw in 1931 in Edinburgh.
