Howson's subjects fall into three categories, clearly interrelated; the first being physiognomic studies of human character, the second picturing isolated figures and the third, more deliberately public, showing human beings preying on other human beings. The Heroic Dosser was an important image repeated many times by Howson. In the present work the monumental bulk of a man grasps a rail, behind him looms a single building and all around him is menacing water, the composition emphasising his isolation. A related work of the same title is in the collection of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh.
