Christie's are delighted to offer furniture, works of art, pictures, porcelain, silver and carpets from the collection of the late Anne, Lady Hollenden. The collection comes from Valley Farm, near Cirencester, the country property she bought with her first husband Dr Frank Howitt of Harley Street in the 1940s. Situated in idyllic Gloucestershire countryside at the end of a mile long drive Valley Farm was her passion and she renovated and extended it at ten year intervals with the help of her friend, the renowed architect and goldsmith, Louis Osman. Working appropriately in the arts and crafts tradition, Osman designed the magnificent cantilevered carved green oak staircase that dominates the entrance hall, right down to the silver lobster platters, featuring appropriately in the sale, which began a tradition of Lady Hollenden and Osman sharing lobster whenever they met. After the death of her first husband, Lady Hollenden married Geoffrey Hope-Morley, 2nd Baron Hollenden, spending more time then at his family seat, Hall Place, Leigh, Kent and his house in Devon. Following his death, however, Lady Hollenden then moved back permanently to her beloved Valley Farm. The contents in the sale are an amalgam of properties originally at Valley Farm and also from their houses in London, Kent and Devon. ALL LOTS IN THIS SALE WILL BE OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE. THESE LOTS ARE HIGHLIGHTED IN RED.
