Lot Essay

After the picture by van Dyck in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich.

Georg Petel came from Weilheim in Bavaria, he was a sculptor, specialising in ivory carving. Petel was closely linked with Rubens and collected numerous pictures by both Rubens and van Dyck whilst in Antwerp. The original portrait of Petel was executed by van Dyck in 1628.
