Lot Essay

This exceptional carved cameo work was conceived on a theme central to Gallé's work. The oak and the acorn were employed by Gallé as symbols of the cycle of life. The theme of the oak vase was adapted in a series of commercially produced acid-etched pieces. Fine carved cameo versions on this theme are, however, extremely rare. Two variant examples in carved cameo technique, but on a smaller scale and without applications may be found illustrated in Emile Gallé by Philippe Garner, London, 1976, p. 152.
