Hodgkin is best known for his egg tempera still-lifes. He was born in Purley, and studied at the Byam Shaw School and then at the RA Schools. He taught mural painting at the Westminster School of Art.
On the outbreak of war, Hodgkin's irreparably dislocated shoulder left him debarred from military service, and accordingly he dutifully joined up to the Home Intelligence Division of the Ministry of Information. This high-pressure job, where he was responsible for compiling a weekly report for the Cabinet and Ministries officers combined with his night duty for Air Raid Precautions, somewhat disrupted his work as a professional artist. Nevertheless Hodgkin spoke of the war as an enriching experience and his painting during these years is some of his most powerful.
