On 8 May 1945 Winston Churchill made a radio broadcast announcing that the war in Europe had come to an end, following the capitulation of Germany the day before. Massive celebrations took place, notably in London, where over a million people celebrated in a carnival atmosphere and crowds massed in Trafalgar Square and up The Mall to Buckingham Palace, where Their Royal Highnesses King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, accompanied by the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, appeared on the balcony of the Palace to cheering crowds. Rothenstein executed three watercolours on V.E. Day, including the present work.
