Stanley William Hayter devoted an entire chapter of his book New Ways of Gravure to printing on plaster. After giving a brief history of printing on wet clay, wax, and other molten media, Hayter goes on to describe how the process of printing on wet plaster differs from printing on paper. The inks should be oilier because the oils are absorbed by the setting plaster and therefore prevent the inked line from flaking off when both it and the substrate are dry.
