Centred on his love of style and sport, his photographic sensibilities stemmed from three underlying sources: his father Henri, a serious amateur photographer who taught his son photography; the Belle Epoque of his formative years; and his privileged social circle in which the pursuit of elegant dynamism was a shared passion. Including six pre-WWI images taken by Lartigue between the ages of eight and 19, six between-the-wars images and one 1944 portrait of Florette, this selection reveals his trademark interests from racing cars and early aeroplanes to fashion, social humour and film-making. His first photograph, taken in 1902 with his first 13 x 18 cm. wooden camera, is a family portrait in front of his summer home at Pont-de-l'Arche (lot 25). As a teenager, Lartigue captured scenes of play as in the 1910 image of a go-cart run (lot 17) and observed the social behaviour of fashionable society as in the 1911 image of the Countess Tcherkowski on the Avenue des Acacias (lot 16). Later comes an image from the 1932 filming of Les Aventures du roi Pausole in the Cap d'Antibes showing a sea of lounging female extras (lot 22). All but two prints in the group are postcard-size or smaller. Lartigue, supported by his third wife Florette, donated his entire archive to the French state in 1979 -- an initiative then without precedent in France -- and together founded the Association des Amis de Jacques Henri Lartigue [AAJHL]. Prior to this donation, Lartigue and Florette jointly selected the photographs that they would keep, which at times involved removing prints from various albums. After the artist's death, these photographs became Florette's personal collection.

1 It is likely that Florette added the 'de' in Liane de Lancy's name when she later signed and credited the print.
