Lot Essay

Yellow Staircase is situated in Alvar Aalto's Paimio Sanatorium, built from 1929-33.

Ola Kolehmainen is a Finnish photographer living and working in Berlin. His strict minimalist images take their themes from modern and contemporary architecture. He chooses, crops and scales his photographs with such care and consideration that in essence they approach constructivist painting rather than photography. And just like paintings, they work slowly on the viewer, rewarding him with more and more details, nuances of colour, unyielding rhythm, complexity and greatness. The nature of these works is so intense, that they move the subject from the everyday reality to a higher level, making us consider our cities in a completely new manner, influencing our ways of seeing, perception and evaluation.
