Seated in a meditative pose on a plinth, the loose flowing garments painted in underglaze-blue and green, black and iron-red enamels with lotus flower heads, clouds and waves, the base with phoenix in flight, with a circular aperture on the back and through the base

Wucai figures of Immortals dated to the Wanli period include the figure of Shou Lao from the Edward T. Chow collection, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 25 November 1980, lot 34, and to a figure of Zhong Liquan from the J.T. Tai Foundation, sold in our New York rooms, 21 May 1985, lot 18.

A group of wucai figures of ladies forming ewers are known, two of which are illustrated in the Tokyo National Museum Catalogue, nos. 515 and 543, and two other polychrome figures were included in the Japan Ceramics Society Exhibition, Yuan and Ming Ceramics, 1956, no. 137, a man wearing a cap, and no. 139, a lady
