YI BAOTANG, CIRCA 1930-1940
Of ovoid shape with a waisted neck and a short foot, painted to one side with two cockerels beside flowers and reeds, the reverse with a poetic inscription and seals between blue enamel ruyi bands, all below further similar bands of key-fret and hanging pendants, the underside with a blue enamel four-character hall mark within a double-square ('Made for the Hall of Eternal Seal')

Lot Essay

The inscription reads:
Pingsheng buken ditou wu
Yi chang qian men wanhu kai


'His whole life he never makes the mistake of oversleeping with his head lowered, with one cry he wakens a thousand gates and ten thousand houses'

The inscription goes on to say that the vase was made as a keepsake for Mr. Zhousheng respectfully presented by Chen Qide. The seals sishi, qingjing and the blue enamel Hall mark to the base are the seals of Yi Baotang.
