Levi states in his book..."a large Scottish quaich with coopered cedar staves, silver rim, a silve ring around the base as well as silver mounted handles, the silver boss is very finely engraved with a crown and thistle as well as the date 1707, the year of the treaty of the union between Scotland and England. The motto translates as 'no one provokes me with impunity'. This is very similar to the one shown in plate 3 in Evan-Thomas and another in the Burrell Collection, though this has three handles. The date is probably contemporary. The simulated banding is from a solid piece of wood turned as a ring and then attached to the staves, remarkably with wooden pins"
A similarly constructed and mounted quaich of comparable size sold at Toovey's, 20th September, 2006, lot 500, from the Poly de Courcy Ireland Collection.
